Periodontology

Periodontology is a section of dentistry that deals with the etiology, clinic, prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. Inflammatory diseases involving only the gingiva (gum) are defined as gingivitis and those involving the whole periodontal complex (periodontium, cement and alveolar bone) - as periodontitis, formerly known as periodontal disease.

Teeth plaque and tartar are in the basis of these diseases. Plaque consists of bacteria, food debris and cells of the organism. If not regularly removed, plaque mineralizes, under the influence of minerals in saliva, food, water and turns into tartar. Accumulation of tartar on tooth surfaces leads to gingivitis, characterized by the following symptoms - bleeding, swelling and redness, as well as bad breath. It is important to know that gingivitis is the first and most primitive stage of periodontal disease and that this condition is completely treatable.

Untreated gingivitis usually goes deeper into periodontitis. In this disease, the inflammatory process has reached the deep layers of the periodontium and led to a loss of the level of the bone that supports the teeth. Untreated periodontitis can lead to teeth loss!

Therefore frequent examinations are required, regular cleaning of plaque (by the patient) and tartar (by the dentist).

Risk factors for periodontitis are also smoking, stress, genetic factors, common diseases and others.

What is the procedure of tartar cleaning like?

At Smile clinic cleaning is performed with an ultrasound apparatus - painless and safe as well as hand instrumentation. Coating and staining from tea, coffee, nicotine and others are successfully removed with Air flow. Through the combined action of water spray, air and sodium bicarbonate, your teeth will regain their natural color and whiteness for a few minutes.

Teeth, cleaned of tartar and plaque, are polished in order to facilitate the subsequent care for them. Smooth surfaces retain less plaque and are cleaned more easily. The patient is instructed how to maintain optimum oral hygiene consistent with the individual condition of their teeth and gums - duration and method of brushing the teeth, the most suitable brush and toothpaste.

We never forget to remind of the importance of cleaning the interdental spaces. Depending on individual circumstances, we recommend floss or interdental brushes. To clean the interdental spaces with interdental brushes, we are developing a scheme to facilitate the patient what size brush is needed for the respective locations. If necessary, medication is prescribed- mouthwashes, gels, pastes containing chlorhexidine, antibiotics. Then the optimal period for conducting examinations is determined.
